goodbye

Billie Eilish is definitely one of my favorite musicians of all time, she has been quoted by many famous singers saying that she “…is one of the greatest musical gifts we have been given in the last decade.” (Wythe, 2019). People who agree with this statement are artists such as Elton John, Dave Grohl, and Thom Yorke. For someone as famous and talented as Elton John to say such things about Billie Eilish should be reason enough for people to give her music a listen and to give it an honest chance. I obviously love Eilish and her music seeing as I dedicated a whole blog and semester of schoolwork to her music.

My teacher did mention in the beginning when choosing a topic for our blogs to be careful about who you chose to focus on because with using all of the different rhetorical theories you might see your artist in a different light and may not like them as much anymore. For me I was a little weary choosing my all-time favorite artist, but it also made me realize that I did want to dive deeper into her music and see the deeper meanings behind Billie Eilish’s hit songs. This final post to my blog will be me going back to my older post and seeing what themes Eilish’s songs have in common and also just revising these posts to make them even better.

The 3 posts I have chosen to revise and theme together are my 1st post: I WISH YOU WERE GAY, my 3rdpost: IDONTWANNABEYOUANYMORE, and my 8thpost: BADY GUY. When going back through these specific posts and the blog as a whole, the theme I noticed the most was that Billie Eilish sings and writes her songs about her love life and relationships that she has with boys. Another common theme she sings and writes about is her insecuritues that she has with herself that also ultimately ends up causing problems in her relationships that she has with these boys.

Below you will see linked 3 of my original post, along with 3 of those same post but done with revisions.

In the first post: I WISH YOU WERE GAY I used Rhetorical Situation. Using this analysis I found the pros to using this was that it showed me who her target audience for this song was and also digging deeper I found why she wrote it and the deeper meaning it had. The cons to this analysis were that I think that while it was written for one boy in particular and she never thought it would blow up, it did and with it doing so it created some backlash for her because some people thought with the song title she was being homophobic. Which ultimetly was not the case whatsoever.

In the second post: IDONTWANNABEYOUANYMORE I used Close Text Analysis. Using this analysis the pros were that I got to dig deep into just the chorus of the song and see how powerful those few lines make the song. It really let me see how she was trying to convey her insecurties within herself by the choices she made to put certain words and phrases into her lyrics. As for cons, it made me realize that Eilish was in a very dark place when this song was written.

In my third and last post: BAD GUY I used The Canon. This was my favorite way to analyze Billie Eilish’s music seeing as I repeated this method twice in my blog. The pros of this were that I got to see how the song was made in its entirety; from how it was written, to how the beat was made, to how the music video turned out, and to see how the song is memorable. As for cons this method didn’t point any out to me.

Revised Post

I also titled this last post in my blog “goodbye” because in Billie Eilish’s debut album WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? her last song on the album is titled “goodbye” as well and in this song it is a combination of all 13 songs prior to this song. She took lyrics from the songs prior to “goodbye” and put them backwards, so the lyrics start with track 13 which is “i love you” and end with track 1 which is “bad guy”. So I only saw it fitting to end my blog dedicated to Billie Eilish in the same way. Thank you for taking time to read my blog and this post in its entirety. I hope it was as much fun reading it as much fun as I had creating all of this content.

I thought since this is my final post I would throw in two of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken! 🙂
